Greetings Relentless Aaron,I have written my first novel and have a small publishing company that is interested in my work. Because they are small, they have offered no advance, but a royalty of a little more than a dollar per book. I would like your advice on this matter. Is it a good deal?Peace and Blessings,Pamela
Dear Pamela,
I hate to be a party-poop, but you have reached out to me, you didn’t mention names, and there’d be no “hating” in my response. This is simply about helping you. First off, who is this company (not cause I wanna know/I don’t). But, can you do a web search and see thousands upon thousands of mentions about them? And if so, are they mostly positive comments? Or, does this company merely have a myspace page and a 5-page template website with no current/relevant content? Second: Every publisher today is offering “no money down” for books! No matter how hot your book is, nothing is assured in this business. In fact, if you watch the news, you’ll see that nothing AT ALL is assured. In other words, like I say over and over again, EVERYTHING IS A LIE UNTIL IT COMES TO PASS. Please keep that in mind so that you will never be taken advantage of. There will never be an excuse in your mind as to why you did this, or why you’re doing that; why? Because Relentless Aaron just warned you? Nope. Not only that… it’s because you have been forewarned. So, what prevention measures do you take? You must know human nature to really be able to answer that. You’ve gotta be able to size a person up, and that usually comes with experience and wisdom and just plain KNOWING. You can “follow your heart” all you want, but a computer (your heart) is only as good as it’s processor (your brain). So take that into account. Do your research on the people involved, and also do some reading of your own into publishing books, blogs, (such as my blogs) etc so that you will be well informed.
I stand, Relentless. Word.
